A Word from the Superintendent

Superintendent Jessee working with a studentThank you for trusting us with your child's education. The energy of our students as they learn together is inspiring, and we hope you are hearing about the magic happening in each classroom across the Shelton School District.
Three years ago, we developed our strategic plan, Shelton Success, based on feedback from our community to prioritize strong core academic experiences in safe schools. Our goal is to ensure all students, from pre-k to high school graduation, are college and career-ready. The global economy requires a solid academic foundation and practical experience for economic mobility.
Reflecting on shared accomplishments, the Shelton School District has achieved significant milestones that demonstrate our commitment to student success. These accomplishments include, but are not limited to:

  • A 17 percentage-point increase in the number of 3rd-grade students meeting or exceeding ELA (English Language Arts) standards over the last three years.
  • A 71% reduction in our discipline rate during the same period.
  •  A 12 percentage-point increase in the number of 9th-grade students on track for high school graduation over the past three years.
  •  The development of a 'Word Work' curriculum for grades K-3, created by Shelton teachers.
  •  The introduction of 20-hour internships for students as part of their career pathways within an academy at Shelton High School. We now have 30 internships for our students.
  •  A redesign of the summer program to include a Writer’s Workshop model of instruction focused on learning standards in reading and writing to close student achievement gaps.

Each Thursday, I visit classrooms to view the growth our students are making. Watching our educators teach to each student’s story, strength, and need as they deliver powerful instruction is reassuring that we are doing the best for students and families. Together with strong leaders, we continue to learn how to best adapt educational programs and services to empower our students. Based on what I see, our district has a very bright future ahead of us.
We remain devoted to creating opportunities for our students to discover, research, and launch their own best futures, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for our schools as we collectively work together to provide the best for Shelton students!

Warm Regards, Wyeth Jessee, Superintendent [email protected]
