Do you think your child may have a developmental delay?

Contact us to schedule a Child Find developmental screening at (360) 462-2139.

Our regularly-scheduled Child Find developmental screening dates run on Wednesdays starting on September 12th.

Early Intervention Program (Birth to Three)

For parents who may have concerns about the development of their child between the age birth to three years, South Sound Parent to Parent (SSP2P) offers Child Find services. Parents can obtain free developmental screening for their child in five developmental areas: communication, motor skills, adaptive/self-help skills, cognitive/concepts and social, emotional and behavioral functioning. Children with identified developmental delays or who have been medically diagnosed with a disabling condition may qualify to receive free early intervention services.

For information on obtaining a developmental screening or early intervention services for an infant or toddler, please contact South Sound Parent to Parent at (360) 352-1126.

Preschool

For children age three years through five years, whose parents are concerned about their development, Shelton School District offers free Child Find developmental screening and evaluation services.

Screenings assess the five developmental areas of communication, motor skills, adaptive/self-help skills, cognitive/concepts and social, emotional and behavioral functioning.

Special Education services are provided at the Early Learning Center to eligible preschoolers age three to five who reside within the boundaries of the Shelton School District.

If you would like your child to have a developmental screening or if you have transferred into the district and your child already has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), please contact Jackeline Apaez at (360) 462-2139.

If you lack a stable living situation, you and your preschool child have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Act. We can partner with you to make sure there are no educational barriers for your child. Please contact  Amanda Gonzales at 360-426-1687 ext. 10365 for more information.

Screening/Evaluation

An initial screening looks at the five developmental areas of communication, motor skills, adaptive/self-help skills, cognitive/concepts and social, emotional and behavioral functioning.

A child may be referred for further evaluation in one or more areas following the screening.

Special Education services are provided at the Early Learning Center to eligible preschoolers age three to five who reside within the boundaries of the Shelton School District. These services are free and have no enrollment cap. We will provide preschool services to 100% of children who qualify.

Peer Models

The district’s Early Learning Program will be taking peer models at or near their 4th birthday for a free Pre-K opportunity. A peer model is a child who displays typical development and behavior in the classroom setting. Peer models make up ⅓ of all of our classrooms. Peer models help preschoolers with delays reach their learning goals through play and social interaction. In return, peer models learn confidence, empathy, and school readiness skills. All children in the program participate in a variety of developmentally appropriate preschool activities, and their progress is regularly monitored. Spots are limited for peer models, so sign up early!

Bilingual

The Bilingual preschool offers education in all areas of development. The child must be 4 years old by August 31. The primary language at home will need to be Spanish or another Latin-American dialect. The family must live within the Shelton School District boundary. This program is offered free to qualifying families. Spots are limited so we recommend getting on the waitlist early.
